MG Slash Zaku Phantom WIP #2

Before we jump into the WIP, I’d like to give a shout out to my Premium Bandai fixer, Joel at The Hangar Bay! Joel’s been my go-to for these hard-to-get kits for almost 3 years now and I don’t think I’ve seen any other store that carries as much stock as he does. If you’re interested in picking up any upcoming P-Bandai kits (Red Frame Flight Unit/Testament/Barbatos Expansion parts come to mind) please check out their online store and use discount code SAINTISM06 for 6% off your order!

In this WIP, I’m going to be painting these secondary dark blue parts.

With the spare parts handy from yesterday I did yet another paint test. This time from left to right, Blue FS1060 + Blue, Phytahlo Cyanne Blue (big nope!), Blue, Blue FS1060. I was surprised as just how bright default Blue is, and it would actually make a decent Gundam blue. For this kit though, I felt it’s a bit bright, so I decide to go with the Blue FS16050.

Here’s the result of the blue next to the primary colour of the Zaku. While it looks okayish in this picture, I wasn’t really feeling it after the shading was applied.

I was pretty pissed off so I stripped the paint and restarted, in my haste I forgot to take the before and after pics, but I ended up going with Blue (85%) + Purple (10%) + Blue FS16050 (5%). The result is a blue that’s a bit darker and more royal. Added white for shading, and I think the result would be a nice match for the darker blue of the Duel Gundam whenever I get around to doing it.

Next is the orange parts, but first We’ve gotta fix the back of the these skirts. In a very un-MG fashion, this orange piece doubles as the back of the skirt and looks kinda weird especially since you can kinda get a peek of the back skirt from the front of the MS.

I use my typical dark grey colour, which is a Ueno Black (90%) + Neutral Grey (10%), then a highlight by increasing the ratio of Neutral Grey.

Painting the orange base coat now, just using 100% Orange. I did end up trying something slightly different and postshading the edges with a little bit of Shine Red.

Using pure white, highlight the ‘hot spots’.

Finally a coat of Orange + some Orange Yellow.

Here’s the final result next to the rest of all the parts. I did kinda toy with the idea of making them a bit more Orange Yellowish like the Kyrios or the Duel Assault Shroud, but given the placement of these parts I feel that I gotta trust the original colour scheme on this one. Hopefully it turns out okay!
